FC Goa’s Aibanbha Dohling: I’ve always believed in my abilities!

In a season where FC Goa have not prospered as much as they usually do, Aibanbha Dohling has stood out with his performances. The defender has been one of head coach Derrick Pereira’s first choices for his playing XI this season.

The first two seasons with FC Goa haven’t been the easiest for the defender. However, after the former Shillong Lajong skipper has started making a mark, playing in roles one normally doesn’t associate with him.

Playing as a left back in the last game, Dohling played an important role in the Gaurs’ humbling of Chennaiyin FC on Wednesday. Three of Goa’s five goals were assisted by Aiban, whose crosses from the left flank constantly threatened the Southerners.

The 25-year-old made just eight appearances last season (all as a centre back), and is hence elated with his game time in the ongoing campaign. “I’m grateful that the coach has given me more chances this season. I’ve always believed in myself, so I put in some extra work at the training grounds and in the gym during the off-season,” he explained.

“As players we need to take every opportunity that we get and make them count. Hard work really pays off.”

With 15 points from 15 games prior to the Chennaiyin FC clash, FC Goa not only had to win their five remaining games but also depend on others’ results to have an outside chance of qualifying for the playoffs. Wednesday’s match was hence a must-win affair – but Aiban said that he was sure of winning on the night.

“The mood is always fantastic when you play for FC Goa. It’s just that this season hasn’t been ours. But we’re playing for the club, the badge, the fans and people in Goa. Hence, I was very confident and I remember – I told Seriton that we will get the three points,” he revealed.

“We played well as a team. We were very organised in defence. We took our chances and carried out our coach’s plan properly.”

Aiban may have gotten three assists, but he cares more about the team’s result than his individual achievements. “I always give my 100% whenever I am called up. I’m glad I had the three assists, but that said, the 3 points are more important,” the defender quipped.

The Gaurs now have 18 points, and have a better shot at the playoffs.

“We do have high hopes of getting into the playoffs, as we believe in our abilities. If we approach the remaining games just as we played this week, then we can surely beat anyone in the league,” a confident Aiban signed off.
