Focus on diet & fitness as India Women’s camp picks up pace!

One of the key elements integral to any athlete’s success is diet. For athletes one of the major factors, the difference between giving their hundred percent and being soggy, which often correlates to the difference between winning and losing, is also diet.

With the Indian Women’s Senior National Team in Camp for the Olympic Qualifiers slated for later this year, a lot of emphasis has been given on diet and fitness.

Former West Ham United goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan explained the need of diet for an athlete. “If you need to play and perform at the international level, fitness is extremely important. We should have the capacity to play with good intensity for more than ninety minutes and one of the key requirements for that is diet.”

She further added that “the body will perform according the fuel that’s put in it.”

“Fitness is really important considering Football is all about transitions now and the team that does it properly seems to take the upper hand. For the same, to be good at transitions, it requires one to be very fit in order to be able to change from defence to attack and vice-versa,” defender Dalima Chhibber maintained.

“So it’s nice that a lot of running and fitness and strength exercises have been included keeping in mind the increasing intensity of the game.”

With special emphasis on the nutrition and fitness in the camp, the athletes are revering in the long-term benefits of proper diet, which will aid in recovery. “There is a lot of stress on proper diet and it is made sure that everything from protein intake to carbohydrates and fruits and boiled vegetables is included, providing complete nutrition which is very important for a player especially for recovery and being able to survive on the field,” Dalima stated.

Bala Devi added that even strictness is important for the religious follow of the regimen of nutrition. “Off-course we want to eat sweets and who does not fancy junk food?” Bala smiles. “But it is important to control yourself and overcome that weakness of binging on junk food. Even the coaches are very strict when it comes to nutrition and they make notes of what every player is eating.”

“All of us have different nutrition needs, but the main objective is to follow a detailed diet plan tailored personally,” she informed.
