The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) marked a significant milestone when The Kyrgyz Football Union (KFU)’s “Football at School Programme” had a positive impact on the lives of almost 600 children and 100 teachers in schools and orphanages across Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic.
The capacity building programme, supported by the AFC’s Dream Asia Foundation (ADAF), was designed to enhance the quality of Physical Education (PE) teachers from the region’s schools and orphanages by equipping them with the necessary knowledge required to create a safe and nurturing environment for the children under their care.
Bearing in mind the ADAF’s three main pillars of Child Safeguarding, Education and Social Inclusion, special emphasis was laid on the subjects pertaining to the prevention of child abuse and violence, and first aid training.
By the time the five-month long initiative concluded, as many as 60 teachers had succeeded in earning a “D” level certificate from the coaching course offered by the KFU while 32 more were awarded a “C” level certification.
The fundamental principles of football coaching were also introduced to the PE teachers, with the hope that they will use their newly acquired skills and knowledge to further empower their peers.
Under the expert guidance of UNICEF and Red Crescent Kyrgyzstan, the programme offered a unique opportunity for PE teachers to not only strengthen their soft and hard skills, but it also taught them to use the beautiful game as a tool to teach children valuable life lessons such as team spirit and inclusivity.
Besides the training of the teachers, the programme included several initiatives to specifically engage the region’s children, including a U-8 football tournament which aimed to instill a lifelong love for the game among the youngsters.
Following the success of the programme in Bishkek, parents of several children requested the implementation of similar programmes in the smaller towns and cities of the Republic.
