Former India captain Brahmanand Sankhwalkar to receive Padma Shri!

Former India international goalkeeper and captain Brahmanand Sankhwalkar will be one of the recipients of the 2022 Padma Shri.

Brahmanand Sankhwalkar joins an illustrious club of footballers who have received the Padma Shri in Gostho Pal, Sailen Manna, Chuni Goswami, PK Banerjee, Bhaichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri and Bembem Devi.

67 year old Taleigao-born Brahmanand Sagoon Kamat Sankhwalkar is one of the finest goalkeepers that India has ever produced.

After playing for Panvel Sports Club as a teenager, Brahmanand played 17 long years successfully for Salgaocar FC before signing for a then young team in Churchill Brothers, where spend another three seasons. Thereafter Brahmanand played a season for his village club Anderson Mariners.

In 1997, Brahmanand received the Arjuna Award and it was also the year he joined the Indian national team as their goalkeeping coach, a role which he would hold for many years.

Later in his life, Brahmanand was attached to the Sesa Football Academy in his native Goa.
