Former India striker Jeje Lalpekhlua announces retirement from football!

Former India international striker Jeje Lalpekhlua, the most decorated footballer in Mizo history has announced his retirement from professional football in Aizawl on Thursday, February 16.

India’s talisman for 56 matches, scoring 23 goals, Jeje expressed his gratitude to the Mizoram Football Association for their guidance throughout his career. “The MFA helped me start my career, and now have seen me off as I called an end to my journey, they have been more or less everything for me in my journey.”

In his club career, Jeje played for the Pune FC Academy before making his senior debut for Pune FC. He spend time on loan with the Indian Arrows and there he established himself as an I-League player before returning to play for Pune FC.

Jeje then played for Dempo SC and then won the I-League with Mohun Bagan AC before joining Chennaiyin FC on loan. After ISL-1, Jeje joined Chennaiyin FC permanently and won two ISL titles with them, while also spending time on loan with Mohun Bagan.

After an extended injury layoff, Jeje joined SC East Bengal in their inaugural ISL campaign, but he could not return to the high level of earlier in his career.

The 2016 All India Football Federation Player of the Year continued, “My knee injury has rendered it impossible for me to continue playing, but I am happy and grateful to have the career that I’ve had. My journey is filled with beautiful moments, and although I would have loved to continue in it, it is time for me to make the difficult decision to retire from playing.”

While calling an end to his playing career, Jeje has also stated that he will still continue to be a part of football.
