Fredrik Reinfeldt has been elected the new president of the Swedish Football Association (SvFF).
Reinfeldt, 57, was Swedish prime minister between 2006 and 2014, having served as a member of parliament since 1991. Since then he has served as a member of several boards and also worked as an advisor and lecturer.
“It’s an exciting and important assignment,” he said. “Sweden’s and the world’s most popular sport has an enormous potential of bringing joy as well as affecting people’s lives.”
Reinfeldt outlined his ambitions “that girls and boys feel that they can develop their talent, and that Sweden can make an impression at club level as well as international level,” during a press conference following the election. He added: “It is also important that we are good at holding back aspects such as hatred, racism and violence that can be a part of the tail-end of football. We need to be clear about what we want to achieve and what we want to prevent.”
Reinfeld succeeds Karl-Erik Nilsson, who served as SvFF president since 2012. He is a lifelong fan of Stockholm side Djurgården IF.
