Germany U-20 squad includes five Bundesliga players for FIFA U-20 World Cup!

Germany Under-20 head coach Guido Streichsbier has named his 21 man squad for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea which takes place between May 20 and June 11.

The more well-know players in the squad will be the five who currently play regularly in the Bundesliga in Suat Serdar (FSV Mainz 05), Philipp Ochs (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim), Jannes Horn (VfL Wolfsburg), Maximilian Mittelstädt and Jordan Torunarigha (both Hertha BSC Berlin).

Since the tournament will begin on May 20, Germany may have to do without one or two players should they be needed by their clubs for the final matchday of the Bundesliga on May 20 or even longer in the event of a crucial match to avoid relegation. Therefore, the squad will depart for the tournament in groups.

Ten players who are set to play for their club sides on Saturday, May 13 will fly from Frankfurt am Main to the South Korean capital Seoul on Sunday evening. Five players who are set to play on Sunday, May 14 will take a flight on Monday evening. For the remaining six players, the departure date is still unknown as it will depend on whether they are involved on the final day of the Bundesliga season on Saturday, May 20.

“Due to the situation in the Bundesliga at the moment, it isn’t possible for the clubs to release their players at the moment,” said Streichsbier. “We’ll travel to South Korea with a reduced squad and hope that the remaining players will be able to join up with us as soon as possible.”

DFB sporting director Horst Hrubesch added, “It’s a major effort getting a squad together for this important tournament because the players are still needed by their clubs at this crucial stage of the season. However, that shows the quality of our talent. We have co-operated with the demands of the clubs to the highest degree, although we’re convinced that the U-20 World Cup will further the players’ development in a huge way.”

Twelve of the 21 players in this year’s squad were also part of the Germany U-19 squad which took part in the U-19 European Championship last year. The young Germans guaranteed fifth place and a place in this year’s U-20 World Cup with a dramatic 5-4 win on penalties against the Netherlands.

Now the players who were born in 1997 have a new highlight to look forward to. They will face Venezuela (May 20) and Mexiko (May 23) in Daejeon before travelling to Jeju for their final group game against Vanuatu (May 26).

A total of 24 teams will compete in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup and will initially be split into six groups. The top two teams from each group will progress to the last 16.
