The attendence in the first few matches of the 2016 AFC Under-16 Championship in Goa, including the India U-16 match, has been disappointing to say the least.
Now the Goa Football Association is encouraging all the football lovers of Goa, and all football clubs to ensure that their players and fans, watch the matches of the AFC U16 Championship being held in the state currently. The quality of football on show at the championships is way better than any of the tournaments ever staged in Goa, and the tournament, being a qualifier for the FIFA U17 World Cup, will be hotly contested.
Goa Football Association president Elvis Gomes said, “For the clubs and players of Goa, the opportunity to witness the stars of tomorrow can never be missed. Teams like Australia, Japan, South Korea among many others are contributing some of Asia’s best talents to the top European leagues and it is important that we accord the tournament it’s due. The tournament will see top notch football, and Goan children must watch the games.”
The tournament is featuring 16 Asian teams namely India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (Group A); Australia, Japan, Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan (Group B); South Korea, Malaysia, Oman, Iraq (Group C); North Korea, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Yemen (Group D), in a league cum knockout format.
The Championships is being played at Goa’s Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (Fatorda) and GMC Stadium (Bambolim), which has free entry for everyone and all the fans have to do is register online under http://preprod.get2thegames.com/ and collect the tickets a day prior from the counters at the respective stadiums.
