Goa Pro League: FC Bardez go down fighting to Calangute Association in Bardez derby!

Calangute Association beat FC Bardez 1-0 in a hard fought Bardez derby in the Goa Professional League played at the Duler Stadium in Mapusa tonight.

Both the teams came into the match with a loss in their previous encounter.

FC Bardez coach Armando Colaco made only one change in his team as a injured Myron Mendes was replaced by Koko Sakibo.

FC Bardez looked shaky at the start but later got into their grove. In the 12th minute striker Latesh Mandrekar dribbled the ball passed two Calangute Association players on the right flank and with the odds against him crossed the ball in, but Calangute Association defender Melvin Lobo cleared the ball. FC Bardez could have taken the lead in the 23rd minute as Cavin Soares crossed the ball from the right flank. Peter got the header but the ball fell loose. Koko got there is time but couldn’t convert it as the keeper Jason D’Mello grabbed the ball and secured it.

Calangute Association had a good chance in the 32nd minute as Yogesh Kadam ran past the FC Bardez defence on the right flank and shot the ball, but the ball went wide by a whisker. Both the teams went into the breather goalless.

In the 49th minute FC Bardez had a good chance to score as Girish Naik crossed from the right flank and substitute Joel Sunday headed the ball. With a poor clearance from the defender, Peter Carvalho got a shot but had to see his volley go wide.

Calangute Association drew first blood just before the hour mark as substitute Agnelo Colaco scored a stunner from a corner-kick with keeper Mirshad K beaten.

FC Bardez got an indirect free-kick just at the 5 yard box 10 minutes later as a Calangute Association player kept the ball under his body for which the referee awarded an indirect free kick. Calangute Association made a brick wall as all 11 men stood on the goal line, and they made no mistake as they managed to stop Joel Sunday’s powerful strike and deflect it away.

FC Bardez had the best opportunity to equalise in the last minute of the match, as Girish Naik once more crossed the ball, Joel Sunday headed the ball, keeper Jason D’Mello dived and tried to save it, but the ball got lose, Koko Sakibo reached for it and tried a shot, but it was hard luck as it didn’t make its way inside the net .

FC Bardez assistant coach Climax Lawrence said after the match, “We have to forget about this game and move on we have to see to the next game now.”

FC Bardez remain in fifth spot with 24 points and Calangute Association moved to 31 points just one point behind Sporting Clube de Goa and Dempo SC.
