Goa Pro League: Sporting Goa trash Churchill Brothers 4-0 in their own backyard!

Sporting Clube de Goa maintained their positive record against Churchill Brothers SC beating them 4–0 in their Goa Pro League fixture played at the Ambelim ground on Wednesday. A fine second half hattrick from Victorino Fernandes (52’, 79’, 84’) and a goal from Mauvin Borges (88’) ensured the visitors went home with the three points.

Sporting Goa head coach Mateus Costa made a wholesale change to the side which played out the goalless draw against FC Bardez last week. Ponif Vaz, Avrhishto Fernandes, Mauvin Borges & Quan Gomes were handed starts in a 4-1–4-1 formation with the Ghanaian centre forward Francis Dadzie leading the attack.

Most of the first half was restricted to the midfield with both teams attacking each other on the counter. Sporting Goa had an early opportunity in the 9th minute when Dadzie beat the charging keeper and singled out Mauvin Borges in the box, however the latter’s on target shot was well saved by the Churchill Brothers defence on the goal line.

Churchill Brothers had their best opportunity at the half hour mark when their forward Doyl D’Silva made a good move to find Chesterpaul Lyngdoh at a striking distance but the shot went straight into Ravi Kumar’s safe hands. Towards the dying seconds Sporting Goa came close several times through Francis Dadzie and Mauvin Borges but no one could get the shot in. It stayed goalless at the half time break.

Crossing over Sporting Goa’s substitutions proved decisive, as Victorino Fernandes came on towards the end of the first half and Seriton Fernandes at the start of second half. The Churchill Brothers defence found it hard to handle the pace of this combo as both the Sporting Goa subs tore into the Red Machines box with utmost ease.

Sporting Goa were finally able to get on the scoresheet in the 52nd minute when Victorino received a good ball from Mauvin to place it past the Churchill Brothers keeper making it 1–0. Churchill Brothers tried hitting back with some good counter attacking moves but Loveday and company got their timings perfectly and kept out the danger.

Churchill Brothers hopes of a come back were severely dented when Victorino added his second goal in the 79th minute with a powerful half volley from Ponif, who did some good spadework. It was all over for Churchill Brothers when Victorino completed his hattrick in style with a thunderbolt strike from about 25 yards out in the 84th minute.

Just before the final whistle Mauvin Borges was rewarded for his exceptional game play today when his strike from 30 yards away sneaked past the Churchill Brothers keeper to make it 4–0 in favour of Sporting Goa.

With this win Sporting Clube de Goa have pocketed 32 points from 14 matches and trail the table toppers Salgaocar FC whom they face next by only a point.
