Hamburger SV appoint Stefan Kuntz to replace Jonas Boldt!

Hamburger SV’s supervisory board has made changes to their executive board with immediate effect, relieving Jonas Boldt of his duties and appointing Stefan Kuntz as the club’s board member for sport. The former Germany international will be presented in the coming days.

“We conducted a detailed analysis and came to the conclusion that, after missing out on promotion for the sixth season in a row, something needed to change,” explained Michael Papenfuß. The chairman of the supervisory board personally informed Jonas Boldt of the decision. “We know just how much work Jonas has put in and so we also have tremendous gratitude for his services to the club, not just on the sporting side. Jonas has accomplished a great deal here.”

Jonas Boldt leaves HSV following five intense years. “It was a challenging but wonderful time, during which we accomplished a lot, fought incredibly hard, and I also learned a great deal,” he said. “Despite the great disappointment of failing to get promoted, a positive overall feeling remains. It was a massive honour for me to have worked with so many great people. My sincere thanks go to the HSV community, fans and partners – and especially to my colleagues in the office who have always supported me.”

With Stefan Kuntz as the new managing director for sport, the club will have another go at getting promoted back to the Bundesliga next season. “Stefan comes from the football industry and has management experience. He will now look to further develop the existing structures and processes,” said Papenfuß. “He will have the full support of Dr. Eric Huwer and the rest of the board here.”

Kuntz was most recently head coach of the Türkiye national team until September 2023. After the conclusion of his playing career, his jobs have included coaching Germany U21s, with whom he won the European Championships with twice, and as CEO of 1.FC Kaiserslautern, where he oversaw promotion to the Bundesliga. Kuntz will begin his role with HSV with immediate effect.
