Defending I-League champions Aizawl FC, who aren’t having the best of seasons, on Monday, February 12, parted ways with their Portuguese Head Coach Paulo Jorge Coelho Menezes.
The decision by the club management came after seven consecutive ‘winless matches’ in the ongoing I-League and the AFC Champions League qualifiers in Iran.
The club in a statement said, “We expressed our appreciation of the hardwork and commitment of Paulo Meneses but the match results matter most in professional football. All the best our beloved Head Coach Mr Paulo Meneses.”
After an incredible campaign last season under head coach Khalid Jamil which ended in the I-League 2016/17 title, it was clear that the season after would be tough for any new head coach with many players leaving for other I-League and Indian Super League clubs.
Under Paulo Menezes, Aizawl FC reached the final of the Mizoram Premier League and have had a decent outing in the I-League but over the last few weeks the results weren’t coming and the club had come close to the relegation zone which is only four points away.
We expressed our appreciation of the hardwork and commitment of Paul Maneses but the match results matter most in professional football.
All the best our beloved Head Coach Mr Paulo Meneses.
