Inaugural AFC Football Technology Conference inspires MAs to embrace innovation!

The first-ever Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Football Technology Conference 2023, aimed at empowering Member Associations (MAs) with the current technological advances, concluded in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Wednesday.

The two-day conference also served to underline the AFC’s established track record of embracing technology and cultivating a spirit of innovation, particularly against the backdrop of the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in recent years.

In his remarks to participants, AFC Deputy General Secretary-Competitions & Football, Mr. Shin Man Gil said: “Our aspirations to remain a model Confederation in world football, as outlined in the AFC’s Vision, relies on our ability to harness and leverage the latest trends to further elevate standards.

“Many of you are already adopting technology and embracing innovation in your MAs, and I encourage all of you to keep an open mind as you add to the constructive dialogue.

“The technological revolution in the world of football will continue to evolve rapidly, so I look forward to your support as we strive to optimise our efforts and take Asian football to even greater heights in the coming years.”

The event brought together 36 MAs and the industry’s best to facilitate knowledge exchange and foster closer collaboration, a move that aligns with the key role technology plays in informing the decision-making process of senior management teams across the sporting world.

The Conference included presentations by a wide-ranging line-up of system and on-field technology providers, AFC and FIFA personnel as well as demonstrations, case studies and scenarios, booth showcases and technology trends. Topics covered comprised the usage of VAR, the recently-introduced VAR Light, and data and fan experience systems, among others.

Mathew Cheeseman (General Manager, Elite Refereeing, Football Australia) “The opportunity to engage and collaborate with other leaders and fellow MA representatives from across the Continent on issues that are pertinent to the advancement of technology in football was vital.

“The quality of the conference has been outstanding – from the speakers to the exhibitors — and we thank the AFC for bringing this important topic to the forefront of our collective agenda,” added Matthew Cheeseman.
