In a match of Indian Super League champions, defending champions Chennaiyin FC came back from a goal down to hold former champions Atletico de Kolkata to a 1-1 draw in ISL-3 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday night.
The guests could have taken an early 3rd minute lead when a Lalrindika Ralte cross was headed onto the post by Helder Postiga before the hosts had chances through Jeje Lalpekhlua and Hans Mulder, but Jeje had to go off in the 20th minute due to an injury.
Atletico de Kolkata went ahead in the 39th minute as Postiga this time put his header into the goal off a Pritam Kotal cross, his third goal in two Chennai visits. ATK took the slender 1-0 lead into the break.
Chennaiyin FC returned into the second half with the aim to equalise and they put Atletico de Kolkata under some pressure. First a Davide Succi attempt went wide, then a Bernard Mendy headed a free kick over before Succi had gone around keeper Debjit Mujamder but his shot just hit the side netting.
Then in the 76th minute it was the turn of Zakeer Mundampara with a long ranger which took a deflection and went out for a corner. Only a minute later Eli Sabia won the ball against Stephen Pearson on the right, put in a perfect cross and Davide Succi scored a well deserved equaliser.
Chennaiyin FC played to win, but their efforts didn’t bring the desired result as efforts from Manuele Blasi and Succi failed to hit the target as the match ended in a one-all draw, a result which doesn’t help either of the teams in their quest for a semifinal spot.
