ISL-3: FC Goa beat champions Chennaiyin FC in a 5-4 thriller!

fc-goa-chennaiyin-fcIn an inconsequential match of two eliminated team of the Indian Super League – Season 3, which was a rematch of last seasons final, hosts FC Goa beat defending champions Chennaiyin FC 5-4 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao on Thursday night.

In the 4th minute Chennaiyin FC took the lead through a perfect free kick from youngster Jerry Lalrinzuala, but the lead lasted only two minutes as Brazilian Rafael Coelho equalised with a placed shot. And the open for all game continued as Dudu hit the woodwork before an attempt on goal by debutante Anirudh Thapa was put into his own net by FC Goa captain Gregory Arnolin in the 14th minute.

FC Goa earned a penalty for a Harmanjot Singh Khabra foul on Coelho and Jofre stepped up to take the penalty, which he put in with only 22 minutes played. But Chennaiyin FC were ahead again in the 28th minute when former Gaur Dudu placed the ball into the net. It would stay 3-2 for Chennaiyin FC at the break despite further chances at both ends.

After the break FC Goa pushed for the equaliser and in the 68th minute young Sahil Tavora just had to put the ball into an empty net after Coelho had done the spadework and then it was Rafael Coelho himself with his second of the night with 14 minutes to play and FC Goa were 4-3 ahead for the first time on the night.

But a moment of madness from Raju Gaikwad, who handled the ball inside the box with no opposition player around gave Chennaiyin FC a penalty just two minutes from time and their marquee John Arne Riise banged the ball into the nets for the 4-4 equaliser.

But the goal fest was still not over as deep into stoppage time, Sahil Tavora scored a gem of a goal from the left to give FC Goa a memorable 5-4 win over Chennaiyin FC, who had in last seasons final had beaten FC Goa 3-2 at the same venue in dramatic fashion.
