Jamshedpur FC head coach Owen Coyle expressed satisfaction with his side’s winning start to the ISL season but stressed the need for greater clinical finishing as the Men of Steel prepare for their next home fixture against Punjab FC.
Following the 1-0 victory over Mohammedan SC at the Furnace, Coyle described the result as “a great three points” and highlighted the importance of starting the campaign on a positive note.
“When it’s the opening game of the season, it’s important that you get a positive result,” Coyle said. “The aim was to win the game and get the three points. Of course, we would have loved to score more goals because we had some great chances.”
Jamshedpur created numerous opportunities throughout the contest, including a disallowed goal and a strong penalty appeal. Coyle felt his side had enough moments to put the game beyond doubt.
Despite the narrow margin, Coyle was pleased with the team’s attacking patterns, particularly the interplay among the front players.
“There was some wonderful play at times — Talal, Messi, Sanan, Ritwik — the front four showed some really good movement and combinations. We were penetrating in behind and creating chances, and that augurs well as we move forward.”
Coyle revealed that the team has had to compress a typical six-week pre-season into just three weeks, placing significant physical and mental demands on the squad. He believes match sharpness will improve as the season progresses.
“As we build, we want to be more clinical in our finishing. That will come with match sharpness. We’ve asked a lot of the players in a short time, but they responded well.”
Looking ahead to the next fixture against Punjab FC, another home game, Coyle emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum.
“Three points is three points, whether home or away. But we want our home fans to enjoy the experience. They came out in great numbers last time and got behind the team. It’s up to us to reward that support.”
