Japan’s Tabata vows to wrest back AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup crown!

Head coach Teruki Tabata has promised to win the title back for Japan following their painful 6-0 defeat to Iran in the 2023 AFC Beach Soccer Asian Cup – Thailand final on Sunday, March 26.

Japan’s quest to win a record-extending fourth title was derailed by an inspired Iranian side at the Jomtien Beach Arena.

The three-time champions had been flawless until the final where they were outplayed by Iran, which Tabata says was really upsetting.

“It is a result we are really disappointed with but have to accept,” said Tabata. “During the first break, I told the players to focus on scoring and make adjustments to their positions and playing style.

Despite our efforts, Iran proved to be the better team and we were unable to make much progress.”

After seeing his side trail by three goals at the end of the second half, Tabata tried to revive Japan’s game with a new plan. However, they were not successful in executing it.

“In order to turn things around, we knew we needed to play a faster, more aggressive game with strong attacking movements and strategic ball positioning but that plan didn’t materialise.

“We will need to rebuild and fix some of the weaknesses ahead of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. We will come back stronger and win the title in the next edition.”
