The Korean Football Association (KFA) have announced that it has appointed Germany’s Jürgen Klinsmann as the new head coach of the South Korean national football team.

Klinsmann’s contract runs from March 2023 to the end of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for three years and five months. The salary was not to be disclosed according to the agreement between the two sides.

The coaching staff to assist the head coach will be discussed and confirmed by Klinsmann and the Korea Football Association in the near future. He also made it a condition of his contract to live in South Korea during his tenure.

Klinsmann will arrive sometime next week and begin his full-fledged career as head coach of the Korean national team. The debut match is a friendly match against Colombia in Ulsan on March 24.

In a greeting to the Korea Football Association after signing the contract, Klinsmann said, “I am very happy and honoured to be the head coach of the South Korean national football team. I know that the Korean national team is constantly improving and achieving results over a long period of time. From Guus Hiddink to former coach Paulo Bento, I am honoured to be in the footsteps of some of the greatest managers who have managed the Korean national team. We will do our best to make the results successful in the upcoming AFC Asian Cup and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”

Klinsmann was a world-class striker for Germany during his playing career. He participated in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and competed in the European Championships (Euros) in 1988, 1992 and 1996. He also played in three consecutive FIFA World Cups from 1990 to 1994 and 1998.

In particular, he played a key role in Germany’s victory at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy and the 1996 European Championship. In the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, he scored two goals against South Korea.

He played for clubs such as VfB Stuttgart, Bayern Munich (Germany), Inter Milan (Italy) and Tottenham Hotspur (England).

After finishing his career in 1998, Klinsmann coached the German national team from 2004 to 2006, where they finished third at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in his home country.

Since 2011, he has been the head coach of the U.S. national team for five years. During this period, they won the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup and reached the round of 16 at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
