Kalyani to host CFL derby between East Bengal & Mohun Bagan on September 7!

Calcutta Football LeagueThe Indian Football Association (West Bengal) has decided that the Kalyani Municipal Stadium on the outskirts of Kolkata would be hosting the high profile Calcutta Football League’s Premier Division A derby between defending champions East Bengal Club and archrivals Mohun Bagan AC on Wednesday, September 7.

The IFA first confirmed Mohun Bagan’s participation in the derby, then it was about finding a suitable venue with the Saltlake Stadium currently under renovation for next years Under-17 FIFA World Cup.

Kalyani was chosen despite only having a capacity of 16,000, which is normally way below the necessary number of tickets for a derby, but it ticks the security aspects from an organisational aspect and therefore beat the Barasat Municipal Stadium due to a lack of multiple entry and exit points.

And with matches coming thick and fast, travelling to Siliguri to play at the Kanchenjunga Stadium was also not an option.

Besides the big derby, Kalyani would also host the derby games featuring East Bengal Club and Mohammedan Sporting Club on September 11, while Mohun Bagan take on Mohammedan Sporting Club on September 14.
