Look back 2017: Four in a row at the SAFF Women’s Championship!

2017 was a promising year for Indian Football with a lot of highlights for different age group teams for both the men as well as women. And the first highlight achieved by any team was the Indian Women’s Senior National team’s win in the SAFF Women’s Championships.

A chilly evening on January 4 at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri, West Bengal the Indian eves beat Bangladesh 3-1 to retain their crown. Thus creating history with their fourth successive SAFF Women’s Championship win on the trot. In the process, the eves stayed unbeaten for 19 matches in the competition including 18 wins.

The Bala Devi led team followed up on the success of the previous tournaments by remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. An emphatic win over Afghanistan was followed by a goalless against Bangladesh. India found their scoring boots again against Nepal in the semi-final before the set the night on fire against Bangladesh in the final.

Yumnam Devi and Sasmita Malik both got 3 goals each to lead the Indian scoring charts while Dangmei Grace and Indumathi Kathiresan got 2 goals to their name. Thus capping a highly successful outing for the girls.

Hopefully the teams coming up the ranks follow the footsteps of the predecessors and keep the Indian flag flying high at the SAFF Championships.
