Mainz 05 relieve head coach Jan Siewert off his duties!

1.FSV Mainz 05 will go into the second half of the Bundesliga season with a new head coach. Previous coach Jan Siewert was relieved of his duties on Monday, February 12. The 41-year-old took over the role from Bo Svensson at the start of last November, having previously served as both head coach of the academy and U-23 sides. The new Mainz 05 coach will be announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Board member for sport Christian Heidel said, “We’d like to thank Jan unreservedly for his efforts. He took on the job at a difficult time with lots of passion and meticulousness, and his work gave the team a good boost. However, this sadly did not lead to a fundamental change in fortunes or results. Our position in the battle against relegation has instead clearly worsened in the past few weeks. We unfortunately now see a change of coach as a necessary step in order to bring about a positive turnaround.”

Jan Siewert said: “I’m thankful for my almost four years at Mainz 05. It’s a special club for me. I’ve made friends with a lot of colleagues here. Together with my coaching staff, I gave everything to make sure that the club stay in the division, but we were sadly missing the bit of luck we needed. I wish the team and the club all the best, and particularly that they secure their Bundesliga status.”
