This week marks the start of a new project from City in the Community (CITC), inspired by this season’s PUMA away kit which celebrates football as a force for good.
Produced with a special Dope Dye manufacturing process to reduce water consumption, the kit pays tribute to a unique partnership between PUMA, City and Club Water Technology Partner, Xylem, supporting a network of football and safe water programmes around the world and here in Manchester.
CITC coaches have developed a bespoke football-based curriculum to educate and inspire children across Manchester around local and global water challenges and solutions.
Over the next six weeks, coaches will engage 2,000 children in 80 primary schools on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), water sustainability and the importance of water conservation.
Coaches will deliver a combination of classroom and pitch-based sessions, including interactive tasks for the children to take part in such as designing their own sustainable water bottles and creating individual water pledges.
Senior Operations Manager at CITC, Lisa McKay, said: “We are pleased to be able to offer this unique course within our wider primary school education programme.
“Water sustainability and conservation is important for people all around the world, so we’re proud to be helping to educate the next generation here in Manchester.
“We hope that the young people will enjoy their sessions, which use the hook of Manchester City to engage and inspire, and we look forward to sharing their outcomes in a few months.”
To complement the programme taking place in schools, Xylem have built a Water Tower at the Etihad Stadium as an educational pillar to help raise awareness of water issues around the world and right here in Manchester.
This joint initiative is supporting projects in São Paulo, Mumbai, Buenos Aires and Manchester, and aims to reach 10,000 young people this season with vital water education and water access.
