RB Leipzig and Marcel Halstenberg, whose contract was due to expire this summer, have agreed to extend his deal by two years until summer 2024.
Marcel Halstenberg joined RB Leipzig from FC St. Pauli in August 2015 and was promoted to the Bundesliga with the club in his first season. His free-kick set up the second goal in the 2-0 win over Karlsruher SC which sealed promotion.
The 30-year-old has featured in 200 games in all competitions for RB Leipzig (the 8th-most of any player). He has been directly involved in 37 goals (14 goals, 23 assists), making him the second-most dangerous defender in the club’s history behind Angeliño (11 goals, 28 assists).
As well as promotion to the Bundesliga in 2016, RB Leipzig’s number 23 was part of the squad to win the DFB-Pokal on May 21, 2022.
‘Halste’ made his debut for Germany on November 10, 2017 in a friendly against England (0-0). He has won nine caps for his country to date.
Marcel Halstenberg said, “I’m really happy that my future has now been sorted out and that I’ll be staying in Leipzig. This city and this club have become a second home to me. During the last year, in which I’ve had to deal with some hard things in my personal life and recover from injuries, everyone completely supported me and made it clear that I would get chances to play for RB Leipzig again in the future. This was proven to be the case in the second half of the season. I’ve had seven great years here so far, with the DFB-Pokal title the icing on the cake. I will never forget this success and it will give us a bit of additional motivation for the future. I’m hungry for more success and I will do everything I can in the future to help us achieve our goals.”
RB Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell said, “Marcel is a really important player in our team. He reads the game well, is left-footed and is good on the ball. He can play left-back or centre-back too, making him very versatile. Marcel is also strong in the air and is a real leader with all his experience. He’s just come back from a long spell on the sidelines and has worked his way back into the team, whilst showing patience and remaining determined. We want more of this in the coming years.”
RB Leipzig commercial director sports Florian Scholz said, “Marcel Halstenberg’s contract extension once again underlines our desire to grow together and celebrate successes together. Marcel joined RB Leipzig in the second division in 2015 and will now spend his eighth and ninth years here. He has become a German international whilst in Leipzig and is a real fan favourite here at the club.”
