Marcelinho (Delhi Dynamos): My best goal was the first one against FC Goa!

The Delhi Dynamos winger from Brazil, Marcelo Leite Pereira or Marcelinho as he is popularly known as, has been one of the best players across teams in the Indian Super League – Season 3.

He is in prime contention for the Golden Boot award having scored nine goals thus far – the chasing pack is at a distant five goals each – and has been a menace for opposing defences right throughout. The fleet-footed Brazilian speaks about his experiences in the league, the upcoming away clash against Kerala Blasters, the unfortunate Chapecoense crash, and much more.

This is your first season in the Indian Super League and you are already the top scorer going into the playoffs. It must feel amazing?
Of course I am very happy with this. I have been able to score goals that have helped my team. I have more games in front of me and hope I can score more.

Out of your nine goals, which one is your favourite?
The first goal against FC Goa felt very nice and it was an important moment for the team.

What do you think has made Delhi Dynamos so potent in attack this season?
We are very fast in attack. I can’t pick one moment. Each moment has been important for me and every match has had something special.

You along with Richard Gadze and Kean Lewis have formed a great partnership upfront for Delhi. Thoughts on that?
We are different players. But, we really want to score lots of goals and that has been good for the team.

What has been the hardest aspect about playing in the ISL for you?
For me, the most difficult moment was when I missed the penalty against Atletico de Kolkata.

Looking ahead to the playoffs, your thoughts on the tie against Kerala Blasters?
It will be difficult to play there. But, it will also be difficult for them. It will not be one tough match. We need to concentrate throughout the two legs.

We know this is a difficult question, but how tough has it been for you since the Chapecoense plane crash?
It was very bad. I still cannot believe it. It has made me think about my life, my family. I think it has been a big loss not just for Brazil, but also for world football.
