Marco Reus to stay with Borussia Dortmund until summer 2023!

There had been speculation that Germany international Marco Reus could be leaving his hometown club Borussia Dortmund in the summer, but that speculation was lid to rest yesterday with Reus extending his contract until summer 2023.

“We’re very happy to announce that Marco Reus has signed a contract extension,” said BVB Chief Executive Officer Hans-Joachim Watzke following the successful completion of talks with the star, who on Friday afternoon penned a new deal keeping him at BVB until June 30, 2023. Reus’ previous contract was set to expire in 2019.

The decision by the Germany international to pledge himself to his club comes earlier than anticipated and will allow the eight-time German Bundesliga champions to plan for the future.

“I’ve been wearing the Borussia Dortmund shirt since 2012. I’m happy and proud to be able to announce today that I will continue to wear it. Dortmund is my home, BVB is my club! As a young boy, I always used to dream of pulling on the black & yellow jersey and playing for this club. I signed based on profound conviction and I hope this sends a clear signal for the future,” said Reus, adding, “Renewing my commitment to the club today is also a way of thanking the fantastic fans, who have always stood by me. The fact that BVB, led by Hans-Joachim Watzke and Michael Zorc, have always supported me, even in the not-so-easy times, was an additional positive factor in my decision-making. At this point, it is important for me to say thank you. Thank you very much to my advisor and friend Dirk Hebel, who has been with me for more than ten years throughout all the highs and lows of my career. Thanks to my girlfriend and my family, whose love always gives me strength.”

The 2017 DFB Cup final against Eintracht Frankfurt saw Marco Reus win his first title for the club, but he tore his cruciate ligament in that match and only made his comeback four weeks ago. Since then, he has already notched three goals and two assists. “Marco would improve any team,” said BVB Sporting Director Michael Zorc. “He’s a man for the important moments and, above all, the important goals. He’s the cornerstone of our attack and, furthermore, one of the defining faces at our club.”

The figures prove Zorc right. Since his return in the summer of 2012, Marco Reus has either been the scorer or provider of 101 BVB goals in the Bundesliga. In this time, he has scored 92 competitive goals for Borussia and has netted the opener to put his team 1-0 ahead on 39 occasions!

“We’re very happy about the fact that Marco, despite having repeatedly been the subject of offers from the best clubs in the world, has made the decision to prematurely sign a very long-term contract extension. I have a special personal relationship with him. From the beginning, the talks with Marco and his advisor were constructive and harmonious,” explained Hans-Joachim Watzke, who concluded, “This is a player who shows the highest degree of identification and that makes us very proud.”
