Mohammedan Sporting beat Jhapa XI to lift Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup after 36 years!

sikkim-governors-gold-cup-mohammedan-sportingMohammedan Sporting Club clinched the title in the 36th All India Governor’s Gold Cup in Sikkim after beating Jhapa XI FC of Nepal 1-0 at the Paljor Stadium in Gangtok in final on Thursday afternoon.

Manvir Singh scored the all important goal in the 17th minute that separated the teams in a evenly contested finale.

This is Mohammedan Sporting’s first Governor’s Gold Cup triumph after 36 long years since beating Rajasthan Club of Kolkata in the final in 1980 and also the clubs first silverware since winning the 2014 IFA Shield.

The Chief Guest was Sikkim Minister for Tourism, Uganda Gyatso, and the Guest of Honour was C. Zangpo Bhutia,
Sikkim Secretary of Tourism.

After the game champions Mohammedan Sporting received the cash prize of Rs 100,000 (1 lakh) and the trophy, while the runners-up of Jhapa XI received Rs 50,000 and a trophy.

The Man of the Tournament award went to Pravesh Katuwal of Jhapa XI, while the Man of the Final award went to Mohammedan Sporting’s match winner Manvir Singh.
