National Safety & Security Officers briefed on Safe Stadium Initiative to ensure zero fatalities at football venues!

The CAF Department of Safety and Security met on Wednesday, 07 May 2024, with the National Safety and Security Officers from the 54 CAF Member Associations to discuss Safe Stadium initiative during African football events.

The aim of the meeting was to standardize match safety and security practices and enhance the capacity of officers responsible for delivering safety and security operations.

During the session, the discussions focused on various topics, including the Match Operational Plan, the Member Association Safety and Security Training Programme, Match reports, Considerations for first and last-mile operations, and Safe Stadium Initiative.

The meeting was attended by FIFA, the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), and The International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS).

CAF Head of Safety and Security, Dr Christian Emeruwa, said: ‘’The CAF Safety and Security Department is committed to ensuring “zero deaths across all stadiums in Africa”. Therefore, it was important to hold an annual evaluation conference with all National Safety and Security Officers. They are our representatives in their respective countries, and we needed to ensure that they are up to date with the latest safety and security operations.’’

The Safe Stadium Initiatives aim to create a safe environment for everyone coming to the football venue and promote a safety and security culture within Member Associations (MAs) across Africa.

In order to ensure the effective implementation of safety and security measures during national sports events, the CAF Safety and Security Department will be training 40 individuals in each Member Association.

This training program is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of those responsible for safety and security operations.
