Nuri Sahin & Sven Bender join Borussia Dortmund coaching staff!

Borussia Dortmund are making changes to their coaching staff as they head into 2024: Nuri Sahin (35, previously head of football at Turkish top-tier club Antalyaspor) and Sven Bender (34, previously assistant coach of the Germany U17 national team) will serve as assistant coaches to head coach Edin Terzic, 41, from January 1. Both have signed a contract until June 30, 2025. Assistant coach Armin Reutershahn, 63, is stepping down at his own request.

“We have conducted a thorough analysis of how the season has progressed so far. One of our shared conclusions was that we wanted to give new impetus to the coaching staff. In Nuri Sahin and Sven Bender, we are gaining two experts and personalities who will enrich us with their different experiences and qualities, both in terms of content and character. We are convinced that the two will make us stronger as a team as we look to achieve our goals in the second half of the season,” said BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

Both Sahin (274 competitive appearances and 26 goals for BVB) and Bender (224 appearances and four goals) spent a large part of their playing careers in Dortmund, where they won the Bundesliga title together in 2011 and then the DFB-Pokal as teammates in 2017.

“It was my clear desire to get Nuri and Sven on board as assistant coaches. We have made several attempts in the past to turn this wish into reality. Now we had the opportunity – and we have made it happen. Nuri and Sven will enrich us with their experience and knowledge, and at the same time they can grow with us as young coaches. I’m extremely happy to have both of them by my side,” said coach Edin Terzic.

Nuri Sahin made the following comments: “It was not an easy decision to give up the position of director of football at Antalyaspor after more than two years, as we have built something special. I would like to thank everyone involved from the bottom of my heart, especially my players. It was an incredibly intense, instructive and emotional time. I wish the club all the best and am convinced that the success story can continue. When BVB come calling, I can’t say no. As a coaching team, we will work together to get the team back on the road to success. It feels very nice to come home!”

“I’ve been in dialogue with Edin Terzic for some time now and know what makes him tick as a coach. When I was asked if I could see myself becoming an assistant coach at BVB, I had a think about it and finally decided that I absolutely had to come back to the Black & Yellows. My thanks go to the German Football Association. The DFB brought me back into football two years ago, introduced me to coaching, gave me first-class development opportunities and, despite the upcoming U17 European Championships, has now fulfilled my wish to return to Dortmund,” says Sven Bender.

Meanwhile, Armin Reutershahn is leaving BVB at his own request. “Armin joined us in January 2023 in a difficult situation after Peter Hermann suddenly had to leave us for health reasons. We would like to thank him for his commitment and wish Armin all the best for his personal future,” says Sebastian Kehl. Edin Terzic adds: “I would like to thank Armin for his co-operation, his loyalty and his willingness to give his all for BVB every day. I wish Armin all the best in his career – and in his private life with his family. Thank you, Armin!”
