Organising Committee for FIFA Competitions meets in Zürich!

The Organising Committee (OC) for FIFA Competitions, chaired by Aleksander Ceferin, met at the Home of FIFA in Zurich today.

The OC received an update on the advanced stage of preparations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 and the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019, as well as an overview of the progress made in the organisation of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 following the recent establishment of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC.

Updates on FIFA competitions

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019:
The chairman of FIFA’s Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina, informed the OC about the work done in order to implement VAR at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019, which has included recent seminars in Abu Dhabi and Doha offering a full VAR educational programme. Therefore, at the suggestion of the FIFA Referees Committee, the OC recommends the implementation of VAR at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019. A final decision is due to be taken by the FIFA Council at its upcoming meeting.

“The chairman of FIFA’s Referees Committee has updated us on the progress made with regard to the implementation of VAR at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019. Based on the thorough work carried out over the past few months, FIFA is happy with the steps taken and the excellent job done by FIFA’s refereeing team and the female referees involved. We are confident about proposing the use of VAR in France to the FIFA Council, as we are very positive about its implementation,” commented FIFA Deputy Secretary General (Football) Zvonimir Boban.

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 preliminary competition calendar:
The AFC will be the first confederation to start the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 preliminary competition, with the action scheduled to begin in June 2019. Details on the preliminary competitions of the other confederations will follow in due course.

FIFA U-17 World Cup 2019:
Following the confirmation by the Bureau of the FIFA Council that the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2019 will no longer take place in Peru, the new host country is due to be appointed by the FIFA Council on March 15, 2019.

FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Paraguay 2019:
The competition will take place from November 21 until December 1, 2019 and the match schedule will be made available on FIFA.com upon confirmation by the FIFA Council.

FIFA Futsal World Cup Lithuania 2020:
Subject to confirmation by the FIFA Council, the competition will take place from September 12 until October 4, 2020.

Bidding process for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023:
The OC was updated on the ongoing process, with FIFA stressing that exactly the same standards that were applied for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ bidding will be applied for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. The only difference between both processes will be the fact that, in line with the FIFA Statutes, the host of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will be appointed by the FIFA Council.
