The fight against harassment in sport has gathered momentum in Portugal as five governing bodies unite to launch a ground-breaking campaign: “No room for harassment in sports – Report it!”.
The Portuguese handball, basketball, football, skating, and volleyball associations have joined forces to raise awareness on harassment, a phenomenon manifesting in sports all too often. To combat this raging issue, the campaign will not only feature a powerful video but will also be promoted on various digital platforms, stadiums, and arenas through diverse initiatives promoted by the five federations.
The campaign is supported by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), with athletes, coaches, referees, and clubs uniting to show their commitment to eradicating the problem. It is a welcome addition to the multiple anti-discrimination projects run by UEFA and its 55 member associations to tackle harassment in football across Europe.
Fernando Gomes, President of the Portuguese Football Federation, said, “Harassment cannot have a place in sport. The FPF has adopted policies and procedures aimed at preventing and sanctioning sexual harassment within the scope of federated sports activity. It did so not only by creating regulations, but also by promoting whistleblowing, including anonymous reporting, cooperation with the competent criminal justice bodies and education among sports agents.”
Tackling discrimination in European football
This new Portuguese campaign is yet more evidence that all sports organisations share the common objective of making sport a safe space for all athletes, regardless of gender, nationality or background. It backs UEFA’s long-standing commitment to tackle racism, harassment, and discrimination within football through our long-running RESPECT programme. European football’s governing body has adopted multiple policies and initiatives aimed at preventing and sanctioning discrimination within the beautiful game, such as the Real Scars campaign, a new online abuse monitoring platform or the Outraged documentary series.
