SC East Bengal hold off NorthEast United FC to 1-1 draw!

SC East Bengal played out a 1-1 draw with NorthEast United FC at the Tilak Maidan in a Indian Super League encounter on Monday. NorthEast United FC took the lead late into the first half, with Marco Sahanek slotting it past the goalline. SC East Bengal restored parity around the one-hour mark, when Antonio Perosevic converted a penalty after Fran Sota was challenged inside the box.

With the draw, NorthEast United FC finish the league with 14 points from 20 games. The draw, on the other hand pushed SC East Bengal to 11 points from 19 matches.

SC East Bengal ran into trouble even before the match started, with Dutchman Daniel Sidoel injuring himself in the warm-up. The winger had to be replaced by Joyner Laurenco at the 11th hour.

SC East Bengal started the match well and looked the livelier of the two sides, with Naorem Mahesh Singh, Antonio Perosevic and Fran Sota troubling the NorthEast United FC defenders on numerous occasions.

Naorem produced a fantastic volley from outside the box, but it rattled against bar and came back into the play. SC East Bengal pushed hard, but lacked the prowess to finish; a virtue that NorthEast United FC demonstrated late into the first half. VP Suhair’s shot beat Sankar Roy but hit the post and came back out. Marco Sahanek pounced on the rebound and slotted it into the goal.

SC East Bengal then came out guns blazing in the second half, and were awarded a penalty in the 55th minute when Zakaria Diallo bundled over Fran Sota as the Spaniard went up for a header. Antonio Perosevic made no mistake in placing the ball past the NorthEast United FC goalkeeper. SC East Bengal tried hard for a winner in the closing minutes, but lacked the final ball.

SC East Bengal play their last match of this season’s ISL against Bengaluru FC and Mario Rivera will be hoping to see more of this fighting spirit from the Red-&-Gold army.
