Aiming to keep the I-League title race alive, Sreenidi Deccan FC take on Gokulam Kerala FC in a crucial Matchweek 19 game at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode on Sunday, March 17. Both teams have amassed 36 points but the Deccan Warriors have played two games less than the Malabarians with the latter winning 4-1 in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season.
Sreenidi Deccan FC head Coach Carlos Vaz Pinto addressed the media ahead of the match and laughed off any claims of pressure. “There is no pressure because we are focused on achieving our goals by putting effort into our individual tasks and our collective model of the game. If we do this right, we know we are closer to winning,” he said. “If there is any pressure, it is on Gokulam Kerala as they have the same points as having played two matches more so maybe this is the last chance for them to close the gap on Mohammedan Sporting.”
Sreenidi Deccan FC played Gokulam Kerala in the last match of the previous season here in Kerala and Vaz Pinto acknowledged the part the conditions have to play again this time round. “It is always difficult to come here and get a result considering the weather conditions and also the fact that Gokulam Kerala have good organisation and play good football. We know what we have to do and avoid here in order to get a good result,” he said.
With six games to go, the Deccan Warriors face a tough task to keep pace with league leaders Mohammedan SC but Vaz Pinto chose to look at the positives. “All remaining points are crucial and we have always fought hard to get good results. We can still end up as the team with the league’s best away record having almost doubled our entire tally from last season which shows how we have improved as a team,” he concluded.
