Sreenidi Deccan FC host Rajasthan United as I-League enters final stretch!

Sreenidi Deccan FC need favours from elsewhere as they hope to take the I-League title race to the final day when they host Rajasthan United FC in a Matchweek 21 clash at the Deccan Arena on Sunday.

The Deccan Warriors trail league leaders Mohammedan Sporting by eight points having played a game less but need the Black Panthers to drop points in order to stand a chance of winning the championship.

Sreenidi Deccan FC assistant coach Birendra Thapa and defender Abhishek Ambekar addressed the media ahead of the game. “We were playing well and leading in our last three home matches (vs Churchill Brothers, Real Kashmir and Mohammedan Sporting) but our consistency in the last phases of the game has not been there. But this is a part of football and all we can do is accept it, move on and improve in the upcoming matches,” said Thapa.

Sreenidi Deccan defeated Rajasthan United 2-1 in the corresponding fixture earlier on in the season which was also played here at the Deccan Arena, the erstwhile home venue for the latter. “They are a good side and their form in the last five matches proves that, having faced just one defeat so they will be looking to improve their position in the points table. For us, the league is not over yet and we need to win this match,” said Thapa.

Defender Abhishek Ambekar has won the I-League championship with Minerva Punjab FC in 2018 and also played for the Kolkata big 3 – Mohun Bagan, East Bengal FC and Mohammedan Sporting. The left-back was content with his first campaign in Hyderabad. “We have had a good season as you can see in the points table. I have had a good experience here with the coaching staff, management and my team-mates,” he said. “Winning the league from here will be difficult but it is not impossible. To give our best is still in our hands and we need to make sure we do our jobs regardless of what happens elsewhere.”

The match will kick off at 4:30pm IST on Sunday, March 31 and will be telecast live on the Indian Football YouTube channel and the Fancode App.
