Sreenidi Deccan FC host Shillong Lajong FC in final game of I-League season!

Sreenidi Deccan FC will take on Shillong Lajong FC as the I-League football season draws to a conclusion at the Deccan Arena stadium on Saturday, April 13. The Deccan Warriors are assured of finishing in second place regardless of the result while Lajong FC could yet leapfrog Churchill Brothers and Delhi FC to end in sixth.

With Sreenidi Deccan FC head coach Carlos Vaz Pinto suspended after picking up a red card at half time against Inter Kashi, assistant coach Birendra Thapa will be in charge and the latter addressed the media ahead of the clash along with defender Jagdeep Singh. “This is our second successive runners-up finish so we are obviously disappointed with how the season panned out given our expectations,” said Thapa. “We did not play badly in the last few games but our focus was not the best during the latter stages of the game and we also lacked that bit of luck which is needed in a title race like this.”

Thapa represented Shillong Lajong FC during his playing days and was also a key part of their staff during their I-League sojourn during the previous decade. “They have made a successful return to this level by playing some good football. I have known their head coach (Bobby Nongbet) for more than two decades and he has done wonders with the youth teams before replicating that with the senior team this season,” said Thapa.

Having signed from Rajasthan United in the summer, Jagdeep Singh has had a breakthrough season – appearing in all 23 I-League matches so far and even contributing three goals. “We had a good season but it was not enough to win the championship. All we can do now is try and finish strongly with a win in the last game,” he said.

The match will kick off at 4:30pm IST on Saturday, April 13 and will be telecast live on the Indian Football YouTube channel and the Fancode App.
