Striker Michael Frey joins Queens Park Rangers!

Queens Park Rangers and Royal Antwerp have reached an agreement for the permanent transfer of Michael Frey.

The 29-year-old striker has been with the Belgian side for the past two-and-a-half years, joining them after scoring 17 goals in 31 appearances for SK Beveren – formerly Waasland-Beveren – in the Belgian top flight.

In 2021/22, his first season at Antwerp, he hit 22 goals in just 33 league games. Last season he spent the second half of the campaign on loan at FC Schalke 04 in the German Bundesliga.

Frey, a powerful frontman, is now looking forward to a new stage of his career with the R’s.

“I am really, really happy to be here,” Frey said.

“QPR is a big club with a big history, a beautiful stadium and top fans. To play in the UK for Swiss players is a big thing so I was very happy when I heard for the first time about QPR’s interest.”

Frey, who has represented Switzerland at all youth levels from Under-15 to U21, is aware of the physicality of the Championship and is ready to battle for the club, adding: “I know this league is very, very tough. It is a fight every game and you never know what is going to happen, so I will have to work very hard.”

“Every league is a little bit different but there is no league like the Championship.”

While Frey’s goalscoring record is impressive, the 6’3 forward is not interested in what has gone before, adding: “I have scored a lot of goals, but I don’t really like to talk about myself or my strengths.”

“I have to show it on the pitch. I want to help the team with my actions. It is always better to be judged on actions.”

R’s head coach Martí Cifuentes said: “I am delighted the club has managed in such a difficult situation to get a player in with the experience and quality of Michael.”

“He can be decisive in the final third, he has high energy which fits into how we want to play because he can help us to press high up the pitch, and he is a clever player too.”

“He is a proven goalscorer across a number of leagues and countries, and a great addition to the squad.”

QPR CEO Christian Nourry added: “We are delighted to bring Michael to QPR.”

“Everyone knows our financial situation so we have had to work extremely hard to make this happen, and I am very pleased with our process to identify a player of his ability who could potentially be available to us.”

“I must also add this move would not have been possible had it not been for Michael’s desire to make it work, and do everything from his side to operate within our constraints.”

“On behalf of everyone at QPR I would like to welcome Michael to the club and we look forward to seeing the impact he can have.”

This transfer is subject to a work permit and international clearance.
