Super-sub Jonathas leads Odisha FC to 1-0 win over NorthEast United FC!

Brazilian forward Jonathas De Jesus came as a substitute in the second half and got his name on the scoresheet in the 81st minute as Odisha FC managed to get the better of NorthEast United FC in its fourth game of the ongoing eighth edition of the Indian Super League in Goa.

The game started on a sedate note and Odisha FC got the first real opportunity to score in the 17th minute when Aridai Cabrera’s curling kick brushed the fingers of the NorthEast United FC goalkeeper Mirshad Michu and went on to hit the crossbar. 11 minutes later, Hendry Antonay made a brilliant run down the left and tried to cross the ball into the box which was slightly wayward and was collected by Mirshad again.

Kiko Ramirez’s boys almost scored in the 34th minute when Javi Hernandez was played a through ball by Liridon Krasniqi. The Spaniard went into the box but Mirshad was alert again to come off his line and avoid the danger. Deshorn Brown escaped his marker tried to shoot in the 40th minute but his shot was not on target. A minute before the half-time, Brown tried once again but this time it was denied by Kamaljit Singh and the first half ended with the scoreline reading 0-0.

The Kalinga Warriors got another chance in the 56th minute of the match when Isaac passed the ball to Aridai and the latter managed to put in a delightful cross. Javi, who was there at the goalmouth, headed the ball wide of the post.

Jonathas was brought in as a substitute in place of Malaysian international Liridon in the 63rd minute and he was straightaway into the action. Javi took the free-kick in the 65th minute from a dangerous position and tried finding the Brazilian’s head inside the box but the ball went just over him.

Thoiba Singh Moirangthem did well in the 81st minute from the left flank and went ahead with a cross for Jonathas inside the box. The striker was right in front of the post and headed the ball into the ground which then bounced and hit the back of the net. This was Jonathas’ first goal in the ISL and that strike was enough to seal the match in favour of the Juggernauts.

The Bhubaneswar-based side will now take on neighbouring team – Jamshedpur FC in its next game on Tuesday, December 14 at the Tilak Maidan in Vasco.
