UEFA advice for young football talents!

Young players from this season’s four UEFA Youth League semifinalists have been given insights into the Laws of the Game and anti-doping rules at a UEFA education session in Nyon.

The UEFA Youth League finals not only provide talented young footballers with the opportunity to show their skills on an international platform.

The potential stars of tomorrow have also been given insights into UEFA and other facets of European football as part of UEFA’s education programme.

Players from the four UEFA Youth League semi-finalists – Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester City and Porto – came to the House of European Football in Nyon on Saturday for a special education session.

UEFA’s chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina gave the youngsters an important briefing on the Laws of the Game, and why referees take certain decisions.

“It’s important that you know the laws,” he said.

“You could cost your team a game, because you might do something and you don’t know that you’re committing an offence.”

When people think of UEFA, major competitions like the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA EURO spring to mind.

However, there is a great deal more to European football’s governing body, and Stéphane Anselmo, a senior UEFA club competitions manager, told the young footballers about the catalogue of work undertaken by the organisation in a vast variety of areas.

“We are committed to protecting, promoting and developing the game, because UEFA cares about football,” he emphasised.

Young footballers can often be vulnerable to the dangers of drugs, and Richard Grisdale, from UEFA’s anti-doping unit, explained UEFA’s work, policies and regulations in this sector.

The young players were given the clear message that anti-doping violations could have a serious impact on their careers at a very early stage.

“It is important you know what the rules are,” Grisdale stressed. “It is your livelihood that is at risk if you don’t.”
