VfL Wolfsburg sign Germany striker Luca Waldschmidt from Benfica!

VfL Wolfsburg have signed Germany international Luca Waldschmidt from Portuguese top-flight side Benfica on a four-year contract valid until summer 2025. The 25-year-old forward will wear the number 28 shirt for the Green-and-Whites.

“We’ve been following Luca’s development for a while now and we’re happy he’s decided to come to VfL,” said sporting director Marcel Schäfer. “Luca has already demonstrated in the Bundesliga, and elsewhere, that he’s a very dangerous forward who can play anywhere in attack, so he’s very flexible. He’s perfectly suited to our team, not just in terms of his footballing ability but also his personality. He’s far from the end of his development and so we’re looking forward to pursuing our objectives with him.”

Waldschmidt made the breakthrough into first-team football at Eintracht Frankfurt after graduating from the club’s youth academy. Following a spell at Hamburger SV, where he scored once in 17 appearances, he joined SC Freiburg ahead of the 2018/19 campaign. There he struck 17 times in 56 competitive outings over two years, before moving to Benfica in 2020, registering nine goals in 29 league appearances in Portugal.

“I’m really happy to be back in the Bundesliga,” Waldschmidt said. “I really wanted to come back. After I started talking to the VfL management team, I soon knew that making the step to VfL Wolfsburg is exactly the right one for me. I like the path the club is on, and their philosophy and ambitions are completely in alignment with mine. I know two or three of the guys already and now I’m looking forward to getting to know the rest of the team and the surroundings. I want to contribute as quickly as I can to VfL achieving their aims in the Bundesliga and on the European stage.”

During his time at Freiburg, Waldschmidt broke into the senior Germany national team, having previously represented his country at every level from the U-16s upwards. Joachim Löw, Germany head coach at the time, called the forward up in September 2019 for the European Championship qualifying double-header against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland. Waldschmidt made his debut on October 9, 2019 in a 2-2 friendly draw with Argentina and has scored twice in his six subsequent international outings.
