WAFU B holds maiden workshop for General Secretaries!

The West African Football Union (WAFU Zone B) has held the first capacity building workshop for the General Secretaries of the various federations in the zonal body to help boost the administration of the game in their respective countries.

The two-day seminar in Cote d’Ivoire was designed to help the administrators implement new initiatives by the Confederation of African Football ( CAF) to play more competitions within the region to continue to improve the game.

Six out of the seven General Secretaries of the federations in WAFU B were present at the meeting in Abidjan from 17-18 February held training in governance, administration, financial management of competitions as well as the use of new technology used by CAF for the effective management of competitions.

This seminar, the first of its kind, allowed the executives from Togo, Benin, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Niger and Côte d’Ivoire to appreciate the modern way of managing the game during CAF competitions.

Kurt Okraku, the President of WAFU B, expressed his pride in seeing the General Secretaries, the kingpins of the Federations in the area, reunite for constructive discussions.

“We are grateful to our General Secretaries for taking time out of their extremely busy schedules to attend this important meeting. Your commitment towards this meeting shows you are committed towards making football in WAFU B better – a key ambition of our zonal body,” Okraku told participants during the opening ceremony.

“We are having this workshop to engage with each other, share our plans for the zone, take feedback from you on these plans and forge closer ties among our various FAs.

“Through such engagements we will continue to improve on our programmes and achieve our ambition of staying at the top of African football.”

WAFU B Executive Director Balima Boureima expressed his gratitude to CAF for accepting the regional body’s request to engage the General Secretaries at a forum to also share ideas and knowledge.

“We have called this workshop to implement the new decisions taken by the Confederation of African Football ( CAF) and above all to focus on the competitions to be played in our zone in the coming months,” WAFU B Executive Director Balima Boureima said when opening the event.

Even though he was a participant in this workshop, Armand Gohourou, Executive Director of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF), represented the Minister of Sports at the meeting.

He welcomed the opportunity offered to his country to host the workshop which brought together the leading administrators of the federations in the region.

“Côte d’Ivoire feels honored each time our country is put in the spotlight to host an event. We hope that this opportunity will be great so that everyone can capitalize on what has been done for the management of our various federations,” Gohourou said.

This the latest of a series of workshops designed by the WAFU B secretariat to improve the administration of the game in the zone.

Earlier in the week a training workshop was held in Abidjan for General Coordinators (GCs) and a similar event is planned for referees and will be held in Burkina Faso next month.

Meanwhile, the General Secretaries held a minute’s silence in memory of the Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu who died in the recent earthquake in Turkey.
