As Chelsea FC aim to add further honours to the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League title they won last season, the club’s 2021/22 third kit is reflective of a modern era for the club, characterised by youthful energy and everything that represents.
As a club long associated with fashion, style and culture, Nike worked with individual Chelsea fans involved in the fashion industry to inform the kit design. Engaging with them and leveraging their perspectives allowed us to create a collection that is a true reflection of the club and its supporters.
Outerwear as a staple of London streetwear fashion became a theme of inspiration, injecting bold prints and colours such as those synonymous with Nike’s ACG brand, into a collection that truly speaks to the diverse cultural fabric of London and the Chelsea community.
The green and black has long been associated with statement Nike outerwear pieces, the crimson adds vibrancy and that pop of colour is reflective of the club’s youthful energy. The ‘Pride of London’ logo is also present on the inside of the jersey, serving as a reminder of the club’s values and status in the capital.
The new Chelsea FC third kit that players will wear on the pitch, as well as the replica jerseys for the fans, are constructed with 100% recycled polyester fabric, which is made from recycled plastic bottles. This allows the kits to help deliver peak performance while reducing our impact on the environment.
No other sport captures global attention like the beautiful game, and Nike see this as an opportunity to scale more sustainable solutions in order to help protect the future of sport. As part of Nike’s wider Move to Zero initiative – a journey towards zero carbon and zero waste – Nike are focused on scaling up the usage of lower-carbon material alternatives. Recycled polyester reduces carbon emissions by up to 30% compared to virgin polyester, and that’s why since 2010 Nike has been using rPoly to produce football kits.
