FC Barcelona to start FCBEscola Football Schools in Mumbai!

FC Barcelona - FCBEscola - MumbaiThe football-scape of the Maximum City is set to usher in a new chapter with FC Barcelona launching its FCBEscola Football Schools in Mumbai. The FCBEscola Football Schools will start in Mid-September 2016 at the Don Bosco High School, Matunga and St. Dominic Savio High School, Andheri (East). And will cater to over 1,000 budding footballers.

FCBEscola’s relationship with Mumbai dates back to more than three years. In the summer of 2013, FCBEscola held its maiden five-day camp, where more than 200 young footballers were given intensive training under the supervision of FCBEscola Technical Director, Jordi Arasa Salomon. Since then there have been many more Camps in various parts of the city and the response has always been enthusiastic.

In the words of Antoni Claveria Mayol, FCB Head Football Schools – APAC, “India’s passion for football has always been awe-inspiring and FCBEscola, true to its mission of nurturing talent, has found immense potential amongst the young footballers during its camps and in the football schools. The enthusiasm, sporting spirit and love of football amongst the youngsters in Mumbai has encouraged us to come to here.”

FCBEscola India now will set up a permanent base in the maximum city and start with the opening of two centres simultaneously. The Schools will be under the supervision of FCBEscola, Project Director, Albert Moratalla, the son of FC Barcelona legend Josep Moratalla, who was involved in the initial stages of the FCBEscola India project. Albert will be selecting, educating and mentoring local coaches in inculcating the FCB methodology and values. The popularity of football amongst the youngsters in India is rising exponentially and the aspirations are to be trained in a professional manner from a very young age. FCBEscola Football Schools will be a driving factor to not only act as a stimulus for upcoming footballers but also enhance Mumbai’s reputation as a football-loving city.

FC Barcelona was one of the first major European clubs to set up base in India in 2011 when they partnered with Conscient Football and held the first FCBEscola Camp in New Delhi. The camp was a big success and since has been a regular feature of the footballing calendar of many top cities in the country including Mumbai. Encouraged by the huge demand for world-class youth training, FCB and CF decided to open the first FCBEscola in New Delhi. Since then it has grown to 4 centres in Delhi and has already trained more than 5,000 young footballers. Many of the players in the FCBCamps and FCBEscola have travelled to Barcelona to participate in the Escola International Tournament, FCBClinics and various other tournaments. FCBIndia now has the largest offering of all such academies and has trained more than 10,000 players across various formats.

The fact that FCBEscola is one of the best youth development programs in the world, coming from a club that has produced talents like Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta from its own stables, is now bearing fruit in the Indian environment as well. Be it the representation in India’s U17 World Cup Futsal squad or in Haryana & Delhi Sub-junior & Junior State teams or in the Delhi Football League representing various clubs the Escola trained players are beginning to make a mark.

FCBEscola’s training methodology nurtures talent while providing holistic development to the youth. More than just learning to play football, the academy instils in a youngster the Barca values of camaraderie, friendship, trust and loyalty. The program in India mirrors these values and has taken the lead in providing many Value added services like Fitness & Conditioning, Health & Nutrition, Physiotherapy etc. The children and many times even their parents are benefitting greatly from these activities that are learnings for life. In the words of Anupama Jain, Director Conscient Football, “It is not about just playing football better, but is about living the Barca values and learning from them a whole different way of life. FCBEscola offers them the chance of living the Barca life right here in India through the very consistent and focussed delivery of the very training programs that have produced some of the game’s greatest players.”

Development of football at the grassroots level in India has been stressed upon by FIFA. With funding to lay astroturfs, setting up of FIFA academies there is a more than ever focus on grassroots development. FIFA is certainly focussing on creating an environment to promote the game at ground level. FCBEscola will enhance this ecosystem and contribute to the overall development simultaneously training youngsters to not only play great football but also imbibe Barca values for life.
