1.FC Köln ends their engagements in China!

German Bundesliga side 1.FC Köln has announced that they are ending their engagement in an football academy project in Shenyang.

In an article in the local Köln Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper on Wednesday, December 18 it was widely reported that 1.FC Köln have withdrawn from the football academy project in Shenyang. For the reasoning of the decision, the newspaper have cited head of the FC Joint Committee, Stefan Müller-Römer on his criticism of the China engagement.

1.FC Köln president Dr. Werner Wolf said, “We have decided not to continue the project with the football academy in Shenyang due to the current sporting situation. That is in regard to resources and our priorities. Other forms of possible co-operation, for example sponsoring from Chinese companies, hasn’t been ruled out. The response from Stefan Müller-Römer was his personal opinion and does not represent the official stance of 1.FC Köln. Köln is a partner city of Beijing. FC stands by its democratic values and for international dialogue.”

Earlier board member Stefan Müller-Römer had heavy criticised China its political leadership as one of the reasons of ending Cologne’s engagement in China.
