1.FC Köln fire their head coach Markus Gisdol!

1.FC Köln have relieved Markus Gisdol of his duties as FC head coach after the 2-3 defeat against 1.FSV Mainz 05 on Sunday evening.

FC managing director Horst Heldt said, “We absolutely wanted to win the game against Mainz. Evem though the performance was good, we came away with no points. It was a bitter defeat. Until the end of the season, we now have six games in which we absolutely want to achieve our goal of staying up. For that to happen, we need to get results. In this regard, we have stagnated in the last weeks. With a change of head coach, we want to give the team a new impulse with a new constellation heading into this decisive phase.”

Markus Gisdol said, “The team, my coaching staff and myself have given everything until the end in order to perform well and achieve good results. That has not happened since the Derby. I say that in that way, as we have not managed to reward ourselves despite good phases in the games. The team have always given everything through the tough conditions that have been with us since the start of the season. I wish my boys all the best for the end of the season and cross my fingers that FC stay in the Bundesliga.”

“We are very thankful to Markus. He took over in November 2019 in an almost impossible situation and, with a sensational run of form up until the pandemic, managed to lay the foundation for survival. Together, with our team, we made that happen. He has always given everything, remained calm, never lost his line and, up until today, done good work. We wish him all the best for the future,” said Heldt.

The FC players will not train on Monday. A successor to Markus Gisdol will be announced in due course.
