The 2018 FIFA World Cup continued on Monday, June 25 with hosts Russia losing 0-3 to Uruguay, who topped Group A, at the Samara Arena.
The guests from South America had the better start as a Luis Suarez ground free-kick in the 10th minute beat the defence and keeper Akinfeev to go in. Things got worse in the 23rd minute as a Laxalt was deflected by Cheryshev into his own goal.
Russia was 0-2 down and lucky not to go behind even further, but things got worse when Smolnikov was send off for a second booking in the 36th minute. At the break Uruguay was leading 2-0.
Things slowed down in the second session with Uruguay scoring a third in the 90th minute when Edinson Cavani scored off a rebound to seal top spot in Group A, while Russia finished second in the group.
