2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup – And then there were four!

Three former champions and a side looking to lift the title for the first time will tussle it out in the semifinals of the 2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup – Uzbekistan following the conclusion of the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Japan and South Korea took their semifinals places on Sunday, joining Iraq and hosts Uzbekistan who had booked their spots on Saturday.

Japan, looking to win the title for only the second time, yet again turned on the power in the second half to end Jordan’s dream, with the East Asian side winning 2-0.

South Korea, seeking a record-extending 13th title, needed extra-time to see off the challenge of a resilient China, eventually emerging 3-1 winners.

South Korea will face an Uzbekistan side who needed penalties to walk away as winners from their quarterfinal against Australia on Saturday.

Awaiting Japan in the other semifinal will be five-time champions Iraq, who scored in second half stoppage time to edge Iran 1-0 on Saturday.

With the semifinalists having confirmed their places in the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup – Indonesia in May/June, the last four stage of the 2023 AFC U23 Asian Cup – Uzbekistan promises to see ho-holds barred action.
