6th AFC Grassroots Panel Meeting concludes!

The AFC Grassroots Charter made good progress as the AFC Grassroots Panel met for its sixth meeting at the AFC House on Monday, November 12.

The meeting began by welcoming new representative panel members from Hong Kong, South Korea, Oman and Australia, before AFC Technical Director Andy Roxburgh gave a review on grassroots football, saying, “Our mission as the AFC Grassroots Panel is to promote football and provide people opportunity to play in a safe and enjoyable environment.”

“Grassroots can literally change lives, and one of the main tools we have is the AFC Grassroots Charter.”

The Grassroots Charter is a development tool for Member Associations (MAs) to raise the quality of their grassroots programmes.

It identifies 20 performance categories such as grassroots competitions, fairplay, partnerships and personal development.

This AFC grassroots endorsement programme is offered at three levels – bronze, silver and gold. At the entry level (bronze), the emphasis is on mass participation.

The next level (silver) focuses on increased levels of quality, and at the highest level (gold), the endorsed members will set the benchmark for grassroots development.

Since the fifth panel meeting in April, the Grassroots Charter has endorsed 10 Member Associations and eight MAs in the evaluation process.

The panel members discussed the challenges and ways to further streamline the assessment process, as well as the guideline evaluation of future applicants.

The panel will participate in the 2nd AFC Grassroots Conference that consists various keynote presentations on grassroots-related topics, a practical demonstration of a grassroots festival and the presentation of AFC’s first-ever Special Grassroots Awards for the unsung heroes.
