AFC calls Extraordinary Congress to be held in Goa!

AFC logoThe Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Wednesday, May 11 called an Extraordinary Congress to be held in Goa, India in September 2016.

The Extraordinary Congress, agreed by the AFC Executive Committee chaired by AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa in Mexico City, will elect the three additional AFC members to the FIFA Council, one of whom shall be a female member.

FIFA had set a deadline of September 30, 2016 for the Confederations to complete their elections and the AFC Executive Committee has agreed the elective Congress would convene in the Indian state of Goa on September 27, 2016 during the 2016 AFC Under-16 Championships final.

Shaikh Salman said: “As per the FIFA Reforms, the AFC will have now seven members on the FIFA Council – an increase of three from what was the FIFA Executive Committee. At least one of those members must be female.”

“It is worth reminding ourselves that the AFC stands alone among all the Confederations in having five female members on our Executive Committee.”

The election process will be overseen by FIFA who will also carry out integrity checks on anyone who puts forward their candidacy.

The AFC Executive Committee also received reports from the Referees Committee, Social Responsibility Committee, the Member Associations’ Task Force, the Competitions Committee, Legal Committee and the Technical Committee who had all met since the last Executive Committee meeting held in Kuala Lumpur in March.
