AFC National Coaches Online Session marks one-month countdown to AFC Asian Cup 2023!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s countdown to the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 hit a significant milestone when it conducted the AFC National Coaches Online Session on Tuesday with one month to kick-off in Asia’s crown jewel.

Attended by the head coaches, assistant coaches and performance analysts of the participating teams as well as experts from FIFA, the session aimed to brief all 24 sides on the myriad technical aspects that will be the focal point of the AFC’s Technical Study Group during the Continental showpiece.

A major highlight of the session was a presentation by FIFA Team Lead Performance Analysis and Insights, Harry Lowe and FIFA Football Technology and Data Manager, Regis Bardet who shared the various kinds of data that will be available on the FIFA Data Platform, such as advanced analytics and performance data, and how these can serve as a pivotal tool in elevating teams’ performances throughout the competition.

Following that, AFC Technical Director Andy Roxburgh also shed light on the number of technological innovations that will be available to the participating teams for the first time in the competition’s history, ranging from the availability of tactical camera feeds and live match data to the usage of Electronic Performance and Tracking System devices, further underlining the Confederation’s Vision of ensuring the success of its teams on the biggest stages.

“When it comes to technology, we have come a long way and there is so much we can do with the amount of data that is available to us. We can use this information that we have at our disposal to identify trends better and raise more talking points which can enhance the performance of all our teams in the future,” he said.

Roxburgh also highlighted how in the last four editions of the competition, champions have emerged from across the Continent (Iraq in 2007, Japan in 2011, Australia in 2015 and Qatar in 2019), thereby signalling an overall development of the beautiful game in Asia.

“Three of our last four champions have come from extremely different backgrounds which has contributed immensely to the tournament’s legacy of rich diversity. Therefore, with only a month to go, I am sure we are all eager to see what unfolds and who will be crowned champions of the 18th edition of our crown jewel,” he said.
