AFC President’s Travelling Fellow for Football Medicine visit Hong Kong!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President’s Travelling Fellow for Football Medicine (APTTFM) returned to Hong Kong in December 2022 and was marked by the presence of some of the Continent’s best minds in sports medicine.

Held over six days, the participants of the event witnessed Kitchee Sports Medicine Centre at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) being accredited as the latest AFC Medical Centre / Clinic of Excellence.
The event was inaugurated with a welcome address by the AFC Medical Committee Chairperson Dato’ Dr. Gurcharan Singh and was spearheaded ably by AFC Medical Officer, and Director of CUHK Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department, Dr. Patrick Yung.

As a precursor to the 7th AFC Medical Conference, which is scheduled to take place in Qatar in March 2023, participants of the APTTFM were given the opportunity to present topics relevant to sports medicine during the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM) and Hong Kong Association of Sports Medicine and Sports Science Summit on December 17, 2022 at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI).

The discussions included insightful sessions on topics such as the prevention of injuries in environments that are low in resources, which was presented by Dr. Thomas James Bellama of the Norther Mariana Islands Football Association, and the Usefulness of Manual Reduction for Chronic Ankle Stability presented by Dr Munkhzul Gurbadam and the ways in which to deal with concussions on the football pitch, presented by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM)’s Dr. Ridzuan Azmi.

With the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic gradually easing up, the Hong Kong Football Association Limited (HKFA), successfully incorporated several commemorative events which preceded the unveiling of the highly coveted Centre of Excellence accreditation plaque presented by the AFC to the Kitchee Sports Medicine Centre, which helped the HKFA become the first Member Association in the East region to receive this recognition.

In the three days leading up to the official ceremony, the AFC Travelling Fellow delegation also made visits to reputed medical centres and sports institutions in the region, such as the Prince of Wales Hospital, CUHK Sports Medicine Centre, the Education University of Hong Kong (EduHK) and the HKSI.
