Aizawl FC sign Khalid Jamil as their coach ahead of the I-League!

Mizoram’s first ever I-League club, Aizawl FC, today announced the signing of 39 year old Khalid Jamil as their head coach going into their second I-League season.

After a mixed Mizoram Premier League in which Aizawl FC as defending champions lost in the semifinal playoffs to eventual champions Chanmari FC, they decided to bring in an experienced coach. It had been expected that a foreign coach would lead them in the I-League but it was to be long time Mumbai FC coach Khalid Jamil.

Kuwait City born Jamil fled the country during the first Gulf War to return to India and after playing for Mahindra&Mahindra at youth level, he made his professional debut at local Mumbai rivals Air India in 1998 before he rejoined Mahindra United in 2001 and successfully played for them for six seasons.

In 2007 Khalid Jamil joined the newly founded Mumbai FC, but due to an injury he had to end his playing career in 2009 and directly moved into coaching. From 2009 until the end of last 2015/16 season, Jamil coached Mumbai FC for seven seasons which is a record in the I-League.

Now Aizawl FC will be Khalid Jamil’s first professional destination outside of Mumbai, where he has played and coached all his career.
